The Swiss education system
Schooling is organised by the 26 cantons, so details differ by region. Lessons are held in the local language — German, French or Italian — which makes language skills the key to school success.
After compulsory school, about two thirds of young people choose a vocational apprenticeship; others go on to Gymnasium and the Matura. Both routes lead on to higher education.
4–6Kindergarten 幼儿园2 years
Compulsory in most cantons.
Children learn through play and pick up the local language. For children who speak Chinese at home, this is often their first full immersion in German.
6–12Primary school 小学6 years
Primarschule — one class teacher, local language.
A second national language and English are introduced during primary school. Marks and teacher recommendations near the end influence the secondary track.
12–15Lower secondary 初中3 years
Sekundarstufe I — split into performance levels.
Pupils are placed in tracks with different requirements. Some cantons allow entry to long-term Gymnasium after primary school via an exam.
15–19Upper secondary 高中 / 职业教育3–4 years
Gymnasium (Matura) or vocational apprenticeship.
The Gymnasium ends with the Matura, giving access to universities. A vocational apprenticeship (Lehre) combines work and school; the Berufsmatura opens the way to universities of applied sciences.
19+Higher education 大学3–5 years
Universities, ETH/EPFL, universities of applied sciences.
Swiss universities teach mainly in German, French or Italian at bachelor level. Admission for foreign diplomas often requires a language certificate (usually C1) and sometimes an entrance exam.
